Tutti Frutti: Abuja Nigeria

Frozen yogurt and Africa is not a combination that would jump to the forefront of anyone’s mind when either of the two are brought up in conversation. Tutti Frutti, the world’s largest and most well known frozen yogurt brand with chains in over 30 countries on 6 continents, is working to change that however.

On August 17th, 2013 Tutti Frutti opened the first frozen yogurt store in all of Africa in Abuja Nigeria. Fast forward two years to January 17th. 2015 and Tutti Frutti had so much success with the first franchise that they opened a second store in Abuja and a third franchise is coming to Ibadan soon.

Why Frozen Yogurt Shops Make Great Fundraising Destinations

With Girl Scout cookies going on sale this week the public consciousness is focused on fundraising more so than usual and that makes it a great time to decide on a venue for the next time you need a fundraiser.

In fact in many cases your local frozen yogurt shop makes for an ideal location to host a fundraiser and more often than not the owners are ready and willing to help make a difference in the community. Like owner of the Washington based frozen yogurt shop Twisties, Chad Thomas for example.

With framed pictures of smiling youngsters and thank you notes adorning the walls Twisties has become the ideal example of a business willing to lend a helping hand in the Thurston community. Thomas, a former Navy man, has a very simple philosophy when it comes to hosting fundraisers in his store, he let’s the group use the store for the entire day instead of just a few hours.

“The reason I do all day is so people are not forced to come in at a specific time frame that might interfere with their day hopefully allowing people to come in on their time to support the fundraiser,” he says.

Back in mid August that very philosophy contributed to the success of a fundraiser for the Lacey-Minsk Mazowiecki Sister City Association that allowed three students to take an exchange trip to Poland for two weeks this fall semester. The group decorated the store with Polish flags and took to social media with requests and invitations to help reach their goals and is extremely grateful to Thomas for his generosity. “Chad is extremely supportive of our group and Lacey as a whole. He allows non-profit groups to raise funds in a delicious way…” Kim Ellsworth-Glasman of the organization said.

In addition to helping local students afford exchange trips overseas Thomas also helps keep local community programs going. For example Thomas recently helped the Raiders and Warriors cheer squads for the Black Hills Junior Football League raise almost $400 to go towards uniforms, competition fees, and trophies. Leilani Batacan, coach of the Raiders and Warriors, says, “I will continue to do fundraisers through them because they are so fun and the staff is so great to the kids and helpful to the community.”

Thomas estimates that he’s helped raise over $40,000 for charitable causes over the last two and a half years alone and while he’s proud of that number he’s always looking for other ways to give back to the community, such as offering a military discount of 15% for his fellow servicemen.

Like most other Frozen Yogurt shops hosting a fundraiser at Twisties is a fairly simple process. Thomas recommends calling him at the store or sending Twisties a message on Facebook.

Plenty of other Frozen yogurt shops such as Orange Leaf, Myo, Menchies, Yogurtland, and Tutti Frutti even have their own fundraising pages online to help community organizations set up fundraisers at their local shops.

How the Design of Your Frozen Yogurt Shop Can Help You Upsell Your Customers

Have you ever noticed that most frozen yogurt shops, even two completely different chains, look exactly the same. Seriously it’s like all frozen yogurt shops were separated at birth or something. Think about it. You know it to be true. Most, if not all, of these frozen yogurt shops, that continue to steadily increase in popularity, feature pastel colors in abundance, bright lighting, modern fixtures, and cute mascots. Right? Right. And that is no coincidence.

Forzen Yogurt Design Yogurtland

It’s like they say first impressions are everything. As a recent piece in Business Insider puts it:

“There’s a science behind this design that actually makes stores more

profitable, says Ekaterina Kohlwes, owner of Mindful Design Consulting, a

San-Diego based interior design company that has designed more than 30

fro-yo stores.”

Clearly the only offering large cups trick isn’t the only thing frozen yogurt shops are doing to get customers to spend more money every time they want a tasty frozen treat.

With that in mind here are some psychological tricks frozen yogurt shop owners use to get customers to spend more while fulfilling their yogurt craving:

Use more Pastel Colors than an Easter Egg Basket

Pastels are colors that promote a healthy mindset, help put customers in a joyful mood, and actually bring to mind thoughts of the creamy and delicious frozen yogurt they’re about to consume. These colors are also commonly used to accent soft serve and frozen yogurt machines for this very reason.

Green in particular can be used to call to mind health and is commonly used in frozen yogurt shops to emphasize the fact that they are healthier dessert option.

Use Soft Fonts

Softer fonts with a rounded shape help invoke the softer look and appeal of frozen yogurt and can can even subliminally influence customers to want to eat more. Additionally the fonts will also help make your shop seem more fun and appealing to potential customers.

Lighting is key

Lights. Specifically bright lights for that matter are vital to the impression customers will get when walking in to your shop. All frozen yogurt shops need to be extremely well lit so that they feel more inviting and to highlight the machines and toppings. Many shops use low hanging fluorescent lights in order to achieve the desired brightness without seeming harsh or overwhelming.

Use Cute Mascots to Appeal to Families

According to a Taylor study women with children in tow still make up the majority of frozen yogurt customers, with numbers reaching as high as 68%. Shops with mascots are much more appealing and therefore more likely to attract customers, for example Menchies a popular national chain features a smiling figure with a swirl of frozen yogurt for hair, Atlanta based Yogli Mogli uses a grinning anthropomorphised cup of yogurt, and Yogurtland has a deal with Sanrio to use Hello Kitty. Having a cute mascot never hurts sales, especially with families who are a frozen yogurt shops target audience.

Is Frozen Yogurt the Answer to Convenience Store’s Lack of Healthy Food?

The frozen yogurt lifestyle is becoming so pervasive that you may come across some when picking up some gum and gas at your local convenience store. That’s right, frozen yogurt kiosks can now be found in convenience stores! Take a look at Donper America’s and Yumz express frozen yogurt kiosk concepts:

froyokiosks.jpg

Diversifying product has worked well for convenience stores in the past. Wawa, the Pennsylvania-based gas retailer is locally renowned for their smoothies and sandwiches. 7-11, now an international corporation, was put on the map when they adopted their infamous Slurpee back in 1967. Now with the staying power that frozen yogurt has shown, these convenience store concepts have gotten some traction with convenience stores across the country big and small.

If you’re in the Atlanta area you’ll notice that RaceTrac stations, a local convenience store chain, have adopted some new hardware including a couple self-serve frozen yogurt stations and a toppings bar

se29548_photo_03_orig_full.jpg

You’ll see some frozen yogurt stations in small convenience stores such as this one in Lower Paxton Township Pennsylvania.

froyo kiosk.jpg

And I have to say it doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Frozen yogurt for convenience stores makes sense with the self-serve model already built into the c-store concept. Frozen yogurt to grab and go sounds like a pretty great solution for c-stores that are looking to expand and grow their business with healthier choices. What do you think?

Donper America Develops Frozen Yogurt Machine Service App for Store Owners

Get ready all you Donper America frozen yogurt machine owners, the future is now. Donper America recently announced their frozen yogurt machine app that will show soft-serve machine operators how to set-up, troubleshoot and fix their equipment.

Donper’s new training app will feature:

  • step-by-step instructions
  • videos
  • troubleshooting guides
  • glossaries

This new feature will help supplement Donper’s current service and support structure of initial machine set-up, over the phone troubleshooting, and in store service calls. Scott Turner, the service manager at Donper America, commented that the problem with their traditional service model was that:

“employees aren’t usually familiar with basic troubleshooting techniques until there is a problem with one of the machines. This app helps to solve this problem by allowing our customers to learn proactively.”

Donper wants the app to educate operators on proper maintenance and training, so they’re better able to keep their equipment successfully up and running. c700x420.jpg

This new app, if successful, has the potential to revolutionize the service and support structure of the frozen yogurt industry. At the very least, less expensive service calls for frozen yogurt store owners. Sounds exciting to us!
